MED - "Slings & Slingstones"

Did you have a sling when you were growing up? The Friends of the Medford Library Guild Lecture Series presents ?Slings and Slingstones,? a fascinating look at the significant role these items played in our geographic area and developing societies on Wednesday, June 15, from 12 noon ? 1 p.m., in the Large Community Meeting Room of the Medford Branch Library, 205 South Central Avenue

Most of us are familiar with the story of David slaying Goliath with such a weapon, but the history of slings and slingstones is much more than that. Slings such as the one used by David were common in the old world for hunting, protecting herds, and other uses, as well as for combat. However, few scholars have studied their uses in the Americas. Archaeologists Robert and Gigi York will examine the role of slings and slingstones as relevant to the Great Basin province of Southern Oregon, Northern California, and Northwest Nevada. They note that the Klamath Basin was the center of slingstone production on the North American continent between 13,000 ? 2,500 years ago.

Residents of Medford, Robert and Gigi York are fellows of the University of Wyoming's Frison Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, Research Associates of the Nevada State Museum, and the Marianas Islands Museum of History and Culture.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Medford Library. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, please call the Medford Branch Library at 541-774-6415.
