With Hydrogen Through the Desert

From Shanghai to Finland means: Crossing the entire width of Asia. Not an easy job when you have already driven some 25,000 km. Yet the F-Cell B-Classes handled the rough desert terrain brilliantly. And although the technology withstood the ravages of the desert, there was still a minor accident. Just for the sake of completeness.

'Contagion' Slays 'Warrior' At Weekend Box Office

'Bucky Larson' flops as 'The Help' remains strong at #2.
By Ryan J. Downey

We wouldn't be surprised by a spike in hand-sanitizer sales over the weekend, considering how many folks saw "Contagion." Filmmaker Stephen Soderbergh's procedural thriller — about a pandemic spread through doorknobs, Blackberries and handshakes — was the #1 movie at the box office, with an estimated $23.1 million debut.

"Contagion" — which stars a remarkable number of Academy Award nominees and winners — Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, John Hawkes, Elliott Gould, Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne — has been a hit with critics, with 82 percent of them reviewing the film favorably, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

"Warrior" also boasted 82 percent on the Tomatometer at press time but was only able to muster a paltry $5.6 million in its debut, landing the mixed-martial arts drama at #3 on the box-office chart. By comparison, "The Fighter" (which critics also loved) took in $12.1 million in its 2010 debut.

By all accounts Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison pals had a blast making "Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star," but it's unlikely they were pleased with the film's reception. "Bucky" (which wasn't screened in advance for critics) took in less than $2 million at 1,500 single-screen locations. The movie's $1.45 million is less than half the opening-weekend number of "Grandma's Boy," which starred Bucky co-writer Allen Covert and "Bucky" star Nick Swardson.

Meanwhile "The Help" continued to do great business, landing at #2 with another $8.6 million added to its five-week total (which now stands at over $137 million). The adaptation of the popular novel is now the 14th-highest grossing film of 2011. "The Help" costar Jessica Chastain also appears in "The Debt," which took in $4.9 million in its second weekend of release to land at #4.

"Columbiana" rounded out the top five with $4 million in its second weekend of release. The Luc Besson-produced female-driven action flick has earned $29.7 million thus far.

This weekend's new releases include the highly touted Ryan Gosling flick "Drive," which Variety wrote "takes the tired heist-gone-bad genre out for a spin, delivering fresh guilty-pleasure thrills in the process."

Check out everything we've got on "Contagion."

After Shock and Awe

Since the attacks of September 11, Congress has approved nearly $1.3 trillion for military spending. Much of that money has gone into mounting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. But some of the funds have been used to dream up and develop futuristic-sounding military devices such as exoskeletons.

Scientific American looked at some of these new and emerging technologies.

Lady Gaga Describes Her Love For New York On 9/11 Anniversary

Recalling the day she watched the towers fall, Gaga calls NYC 'the husband I never married.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga is one of the many New Yorkers who were affected personally by the terror attacks on September 11. The pop star was in high school in Manhattan the day it happened, and 10 years later, she still tears up when remembering the intense emotions she felt as she watched the Twin Towers fall.

"I mean, there's so many stories that people don't know," she told MTV during her intimate chat for her special "Inside the Outside," which was taped the day after Osama bin Laden was killed and 9/11 was on everyone's mind. "I watched the towers fall from the roof of my school, holding all my best friends. I don't know ... just, my affinity and my love and the relationship I have with New York City — it's like the husband I never married."

MTV parent company Viacom has teamed up with MyGoodDeed and HandsOn Network, organizers of this year's September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and with artists including Lady Gaga, Nas, DJ Pauly D, Julianne Hough and Drake Bell to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks by asking, "What will you do to remember?"

In her documentary interview, Gaga spoke often about her love for her hometown, sharing that she has one very personal way of connecting with the Big Apple. Gesturing the jacket she wore, she said, "Well, this is how I get home; my leather jacket's like my Dorothy slippers. ... That's why I changed when we sat down. You said, 'I want to ask you about New York,' and I said, 'You'd better get my leather.' I wrote so many songs on this new album [Born This Way] about New York City. I mean, every song on all my albums has some relationship to New York City, but one in particular 'Marry the Night,' that record is about my husband, New York."

Through Sunday, Viacom's networks will air specially produced "I Will" public service announcements featuring artists and actors, along with Viacom employees.

The multiplatform public service campaign is designed to inspire Americans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks by committing to good deeds, charity or volunteer service.

What will you do to remember 9/11? Share your thoughts below, and visit 911day.org to upload your video response.

Castles in the Air (preview)

On that cool blue morning 10 years ago when everything changed, Les Robertson was half a world away, hosting a dinner at a Hong Kong restaurant. The rattling of cell phones left on the table--“a detestable habit”--was the first indication that something had struck one of the Twin Towers. Robertson, the revered engineer responsible for their structural design, was at first unconcerned.

“I just assumed that a helicopter had run into the Trade Center,” he said recently, speaking from his 47th-floor office, which looks out over Ground Zero. Such an event, unfortunate as it might have been, was well within the tolerances for which the towers were designed. A few minutes later, however, when those cell phones started buzzing once more with news of a second crash, he realized it was “quite another thing again” and excused himself to watch the unfolding events from a hotel room.

Organizations and Businesses Respond to the American Jobs Act

On Thursday, President Obama introduced the American Jobs Act, and called on Congress to pass it quickly so we can put more people back to work and put more money in the pockets of working Americans. Now organizations and businesses are adding their voice to the call for action

Teamsters, Jim Hoffa, General President
“Congress must pass President Obama’s plan now. The jobs crisis is an American problem. It isn’t President Obama’s problem and it isn’t a Republican or Democratic problem. All Americans need to come together to create good jobs for the good of our economy and the good of our country.”

Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Mary Kay Henry, President
“Tonight, President Obama displayed the leadership America needs by laying out a strong agenda to get America back to work. The proposals he outlined are an excellent starting point in the crucial effort to create good jobs now.”

United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), Joseph Hansen, President
“President Obama’s plan for job creation, including a private fund to rebuild our roads and schools, a tax cut for companies that hire workers and help for the long-term unemployed, is a good start.  The nation’s job crisis demands leadership from President Obama, but he cannot revive the economy alone.  Bold leadership is also needed from Republicans in Congress and the business community in order to create jobs that can support a family and rebuild the middle class.”

Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), Terry O’Sullivan, General President
“We applaud President Obama's bold, smart, progressive plan for putting Americans back to work. At its foundation, The American Jobs Act is based on something we’ve always believed – if America wants to continue being a great nation, it needs to outbuild its rivals and ensure it has the greatest transportation system in the world.”

The Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association (SMWIA), Joseph J. Nigro, General President
“Last night, President Obama displayed the leadership America needs by outlining out a strong agenda to get America back to work. Action is needed on these proposals now to get America moving again.”

Cooking That Sucks

Nature, famously, abhors a vacuum. But some cooks have learned to feel differently. Step through the swinging doors at the back of a top restaurant like Alinea in Chicago, and you may find vacuum pumps being used to reduce cooking juices into concentrated sauces, to distill essential oils from fruits and vegetables, to dehydrate chips or to brew coffee.

Many of these techniques originated in chemistry laboratories or industrial food-processing operations, and the equipment involved still evokes the bench scientist more than the top chef. But with all those Erlenmeyer flasks, innovative cooks have discovered ways to achieve culinary feats that are impractical by any conventional means.

Ongoing snippets of information for your consideration?

Prepared for Disaster? - Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 ten years ago, healthcare organizations have improved emergency response plans, have a better understanding of what needs to happen in a crisis and are better equipped to respond. However, Dave Donahue, director of the health policy and preparedness program at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, says hospitals and healthcare providers are not even close to where they need to be to handle a large scale disaster. The primary areas of disaster response that need improvement are communications between hospitals and public health departments and management of personnel.

U.S. Shows No Job Growth, Except for Healthcare - According to last week?s recent job figures from the Department of Labor, the overall United States unemployment rate remained stagnant at 9.1 percent. However, the good news is healthcare employment rose by 30,000 in August (ambulatory healthcare services and hospitals added 18,000 and 8,000 jobs, respectively). Over the last 12 months healthcare employment has grown by 306,000. While consumer confidence is now at an all-time low, the healthcare industry provides some hope for the struggling economy.

Healthcare Job Postings Increase Online ? On another positive note for the healthcare industry, online advertised openings for healthcare jobs increased by more than 26,000 in August. According to The Conference Board, the number broke two consecutive months of decline and healthcare was the only major industry to register an increase in August. With so many new jobs now available in the medical field, could healthcare help jump start the economy when we need it most?

NEJM Malpractice Study ? The issue of medical malpractice has always been a hot topic of conversation among members of the healthcare community, but most have not fully understood its true scope. According to a new study by the New England Journal of Medicine, each year 7.4 percent of physicians face a medical malpractice suit with 78 percent of those not resulting in payments to claims. Furthermore, the study found that neurosurgeons are most at risk, with 19.1 percent being brought to court, while pediatricians and psychiatrics are the lowest with 3.1 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively. With a substantial variation in the likelihood of malpractice suits, the study is an eye opening analysis on one of healthcare?s most pressing issues.

'The Debt' Stars Talk German Accents, '70s Thrillers

Sam Worthington and Jessica Chastain talk to MTV News about challenges and rewards of playing special agents in John Madden film.
By Kara Warner

Sam Worthington in "The Debt"
Photo: Focus Features

Even at a glance, John Madden's new movie "The Debt" has a lot going for it: a cool-looking espionage thriller that boasts a stellar cast, including breakout stars Sam Worthington ("Avatar") and Jessica Chastain ("The Help" and "Tree of Life"), as well as acclaimed actors Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson and Ciarán Hinds.

"Debt" follows a trio of government agents who are haunted by repercussions from a top-secret mission they carried out in the 1960s. When we meet them, it's 1997 and the agents are mature adults played by Mirren, Wilkinson and Hinds. We relive their harrowing ordeal in a series of flashbacks, wherein the same characters are played by Chastain, Marton Csokas and Worthington. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems, and the agents must again risk their lives for redemption.

When MTV News sat down with Worthington (and his co-star Chastain) recently, we asked what separates "The Debt" from other thrillers.

"It's like an old 1970s thriller, I think," Worthington said. "It has the feel of 'The Boys From Brazil,' 'Three Days of the Condor,' 'The Conversation,' stuff like that. That was John [Madden's] pitch to me from the start," he explained. "There is a different pace on it, it was a movie that I would like to go and see. It is different.

The role also required Worthington to take on various German accents, so we wondered how the actor went about mastering them.

"I find them always hard, it's like a costume," Worthington admitted. "But to learn German on top of an Israeli lilt thrown on top of an Australian accent with a guy who's not very good at accents anyway, it was doubly hard. You just put in the effort, and Jessica Chastain is great at accents — she kind of helped me through it." Asked if his newly acquired accent stuck with him, Worthington laughed. "No, I drop accents. The character traits I keep and the emotions I keep, but the accents and the costume I don't take home."

Chastain revealed that she also put in a lot of work, perhaps more than she ever has for a character. "I always do preparation but it was very strange," Chastain told us, "the preparation for this was more exhausting than filming the movie. About three and a half months before filming started, I started learning Krav Maga. I took a beginner's course Berlitz in German, I started learning the accent. I started watching a lot of Helen Mirren. I read about the Holocaust and the medical experiments, which was devastating to read about the atrocities that happened then," she recalled. "It really was like going back to school for me."

Check out everything we've got on "The Debt."

Meek Mill 'Ima Boss' Video Fulfills Boyhood 'Dream'

'As a young boy ... you had dreams of shooting a big video in your 'hood,' Philly MC tells MTV News of gritty clip.
By Rob Markman

Meek Mill
Photo: Jerritt Clark/ FilmMagic

It has been a breakout year for Meek Mill, and in his video for "Ima Boss," the Rick Ross protégé wanted to celebrate all things Philly.

"It felt good, man. That's what I always had dreams to do," Mill told MTV News about making a clip in his hometown. "As a young boy, you wanted to be a rapper, you had dreams of shooting a big video in your 'hood, everybody showing you love. It went exactly as planned."

Before Meek, rappers like State Property's Beanie Sigel, Freeway and Young Chris were the premier torchbearers for the city, and together they all appear in "Ima Boss."

"You know, they just came through and rocked out with me," Meek said of the cameos. "If they had a video, I'd come through and rock out; they wouldn't even have to call me. It's all love, it's all Philly at the end of the day," the Philadelphia MC added. "They opened the doors for me and I'm tryna open the doors for other people, so it's like we all work together to do the same thing at the end of the day."

The Benny Boom-directed video has no real bells and whistles, just a distinct street feel that has been absent in many of today's rap videos. Throughout much of the video, Meek Milli and his crew can be seen riding motorbikes through the streets, a visual that is reminiscent of DMX's 1998 "Ruff Ryders Anthem" clip. It is no coincidence.

"I used to always love those videos and I used to always run in the house and try to catch those videos coming on," the Maybach Music MC says of the old Ruff Ryders visuals. "The Eve videos, when Eve was sitting on the handlebars of the four-wheeler, I used to do that in the street just 'cause of the video."

Even the hefty Ross can be seen riding the streets of Philly on a four-wheeler. "He was with it, I was kind of skeptical about it," Meek said. "He was like, 'Whoa, let's ride through the 'hood!' I was like, 'You sure that's what you wanna do? This the jungle out here,' but he was with it. Ross is always like that when it comes to Philly." Like a Bawse!

What do you think of Meek's "Ima Boss" video? Tell us in the comments!
